Get Hands-On This Summer at Diesel Camp with TechKnowledge

Experience Diesel Camp at LATC This Summer

This summer, students can step directly into the world of diesel technology at our hands-on Diesel Camps at Lake Area Technical College (LATC) in Watertown, South Dakota.

Kibble Equipment, Valley Plains Equipment, and Platte Valley Equipment partnered together to create this experience. Through that partnership, students connect with our TechKnowledge program and see what a future in diesel service truly looks like.

Camp Dates and Schedule

We will host Diesel Camp during two separate weeks:

  • June 22–26
  • July 13–17

Each day runs from 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM. Students can choose one day per week, which makes it easy to fit into summer schedules.

We designed this camp for students ages 16 and older, and we limit each day to just six students.

Hands-On Learning with Real Students and Equipment

Diesel Camp focuses on action, not lectures.

Students work directly in the classroom and shop alongside first-year LATC students. They experience a real “day in the life” of a diesel service technician.

During the camp, students will:

  • Use industry tools
  • Work on real equipment
  • Learn from experienced instructors
  • Tackle real-world tasks

Explore Multiple Diesel Technology Skills

Each week highlights a different mix of technical skills. Students gain exposure to several key areas in diesel technology.

They will work in:

  • Preventative Maintenance
  • HVAC Systems
  • Welding
  • Machine Technology

This approach helps students discover what interests them most while building real skills.

We cap each day at six students to keep the experience personal and engaging.

JDTech Day with Southeast Community College Recap!

Have you ever stared at a box of parts, full of optimism, only to realize you have absolutely no idea which piece goes first? Maybe the instructions are missing—or worse, written in six languages and none of them make sense.

 

Sometimes, all it takes is someone to point you in the right direction and say, “Start here.” That’s exactly the goal behind JDTech Day, recently hosted at Southeast Community College in Milford. 

JDTech Day gave prospective students a hands-on introduction to college life and the world of diesel technology.

 

Attendees didn’t just sit through presentations—they toured campus, explored residence halls, and stepped directly into the John Deere Technology (JDTech) facilities. This event showe students what learning looks like when it’s practical, engaging, and occasionally requires a little elbow grease.

Inside the JDTech building, students rotated through multiple interactive lab stations. Electrical labs allowed participants to build and test their own circuits, proving that wires really do belong somewhere (even if it takes a few tries).

Agricultural equipment labs, students worked with a square baler to make their own knots—because nothing says precision like tying something that actually has to hold together in the field. They also tested seed meters, ran basic hydraulic circuits, and explored the systems that keep modern equipment operating efficiently.

One crowd favorite involved manually operating a diesel injection pump and injectors. This lab quickly became a strength test, as students discovered just how much force it takes to move fuel where it needs to go.

 

Let’s just say the equipment held up better than a few speed bars, which may or may not have been bent in the name of learning. 😉

Events like this highlight what the John Deere Technology Program at Southeast Community College does best: combining real-world technology with hands-on instruction. The program prepares students for careers in the diesel and agricultural equipment industries by teaching the skills employers expect—before students ever graduate.

 

In the end, JDTech Day proved one thing clearly: the best way to learn is to roll up your sleeves, try it yourself, and discover that college can be both serious preparation and seriously fun.

Each February, communities across the country celebrate National FFA Week and recognize the impact of the National FFA Organization. At Platte Valley Equipment, we proudly join that celebration and thank the students who choose to lead, serve, and grow through agricultural education.

FFA members step up. They take on leadership roles in their chapters and communities. Through hands-on projects and supervised agricultural experiences, they build technical skills and strengthen their confidence.
