Farm Safety in the Midwest
Farming is the backbone of Midwest economy and identity, with generations of families working the land to feed the nation. But with great rewards come significant risks. Nebraska farmers face some of the highest rates of farm-related injuries in the country, making safety not just a concern, but a priority. Farm Safety is always important, whether you’re preparing for planting, harvesting, or just maintaining your equipment.

Machinery and Equipment Safety
Tractors, combines, and other equipment are vital tools—but they can also be deadly. Always:
Regularly inspect and maintain tractors, combines, and other machinery.
Always use guards and shields.
Shut down equipment before servicing.
Train all operators on safe usage.

Grain Bin and Confined Space Safety
Confined spaces can make you panic and cause unclear thinking:
Never enter a grain bin when grain is flowing.
Always use a harness and safety observer when entering confined spaces.
Be trained in rescue procedures. Purchase harnesses.

Chemical Safety
Pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers play an important role in crop production—but they’re also hazardous:
Use personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling pesticides or fertilizers.
Store chemicals in locked, labeled containers.
Follow label instructions for application and disposal.
Keep a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for each chemical.

Fatigue and Stress Management
Stress and Fatigue is the #1 cause of accidents on the farm:
Take regular breaks and get enough sleep.
Avoid rushing, especially during planting and harvest seasons.
Address mental health and seek support when needed.

Emergency Preparedness
Have a plan in place before something goes wrong:
Keep first-aid kits and fire extinguishers accessible.
Have emergency contact numbers posted clearly.
Train workers in CPR and first aid.

Farm Safety isn’t a one-time conversation, it’s a mindset. By building safety into daily routines, training, and family discussions, you can reduce accidents and ensure that the farm remains a safe place to work and live. After all, the most important crop we grow each year is a healthy future. Platte Valley Equipment takes safety very serious in our shops and out on the road.
